The WEA offers contextualised, accredited courses across London for adults returning to study or studying for the first time in the UK. Our quality courses are designed to improve reading, writing, speaking and listening, maths and study skills and lead to a nationally recognised qualification in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Literacy or Numeracy from Entry 1 to Entry 3 and Functional Skills English and Maths at level 1 and level 2 (equivalent to high level GCSE).
All our courses are delivered in partnership with other organisations in the community and workplace. Delivery is flexible and can be arranged to suit the learners’ schedules. An assessment and information session before courses begin helps to give an initial sense of level and learners’ requirements.
Course content is negotiated with learners and aims to meet their interests and needs. Progression opportunities are available at the end of every course. Courses are often tailored for specific situations, for example, learners may wish to help support children in school, gain the skills in order to study further or to gain a job, or to progress in present work, or just to build on everyday communication and budgetary skills.
ESOL, Basic English and Maths classes are available at many community centres, schools, in the workplace, community associations and in most London boroughs. Centres will be able to give general information about courses. We can also offer additional support on vocational and accredited courses such as ‘Helping in Schools’. In some centres there are crèche facilities for our learners and it is also possible for learners to apply for financial help with individual childcare arrangements where they study.
If you are interested in finding a course in your local area, you can contact the WEA London Region office on: 020 7426 1950.
